Learning Herbal Remedy Basics

Herbalists are practitioners of holistic medicine who employ herbal remedies to help their clients. They believe that everyone has an inner vital force that is constantly working to maintain physical, emotional, and mental health.

Herbalists believe that disease comes when a person’s inner force or natural immune system become out of balance. Then they prescribe an herbal remedy that are found in nature to bring back the inner balance of a person’s systems.

Herbal remedies must always be treated with respect as they can be dangerous. Some of the most potent remedies come from plants and can be very toxic if not used properly. One thing that a lot of people misunderstand is that just because something says “natural” does not mean it does not have any serious side effects.

It is therefore imperative that you contact a herbal remedy practitioner before you begin taking herbal remedies of any kind. Natural remedies can even interact badly with prescription drugs.

Herbalists believe that their natural herbs work in our bodies the same way as the manufactured chemical prescription medicines do. However that is probably the only similarity.

See how much you can learn about Herbal Remedies when you take a little time to read a well-researched article? Don’t miss out on the rest of this great information.

In the west herbal remedies are most often used for improving the quality of the bodies digestion and absorption of nutrients, as well as improving the respiratory and circulatory systems.

Natural Herbs are also used to remove waste and toxins from the bodies cells, to soothe the skin and promote healing.

Herbal remedies are classified by the action they have in the body or which body systems they affect. For instance some herbal remedies a diuretic which means they stimulate and cause the elimination of urine. Some are sedatives that reduce the amount of nervous energy. And still other remedies are antiseptic and prevent infections.

Herbal remedies can be administered in many different ways. Some are to be used as a drink while others are used on the skin as a cream or ointment. Some other herbal remedies are taken in pill form or placed in a bath to soak in.
These natural remedies treat the underlying cause of the illness and so the person taking them must be patient. This is because it will take longer to treat the actual cause of the problem than to just treat the symptoms as a lot of our chemical drugs do. With persistence and patience herbal remedies work rather well.

When deciding to use herbal remedies or not you have to remember that they work completely simply slower than other medicines. Therefore it is wrong to have the expectations that you will be well instantly as you sometimes are from chemical medicines.

Use Herbs To Better Your Life

Herbs work in nearly magical and simply astonishing ways: pains vanish, spasms can relax, constipation is overcome, headaches disappear, nervousness recedes, colds can be banished, allergies counteracted, fevers controlled, blood flow arrested… the magic seems never-ending. Since early Neanderthal man, herbs and plants have been used for maintaining good health, as menopause herbal remedies and healing ailments. And even with the progress of modern medical science, methods and ideas based on healing with herbs have been sustained and grown in different nations, among differing cultures, often being used in exactly the same way.

Most herbs can be planted and cultivated with a minimum of effort on your part. Several herbs are drought tolerant, many are perennials, and a number are resistant to insects and diseases. Herbs are versatile plants, providing amazing flavors for seasoning our food and adding fragrances to room freshening potpourri. In addition, with their attractive shapes, intoxicating scents, diverse textures and numerous shades of gray and green, herbs are often used in making a landscape that appeals to the senses of sight, touch and smell. Could you imagine doing without them?

Make sure when you plant your garden it is as close as possible to the kitchen. I know it sound a little trite to say this but you would be surprised at how many herb gardeners plant their herbs all the way in the back of their garden And then when they think about using them – find it is just “too far” to walk to harvest. Put them right at the back door. You might even want to grow the most common ones in a handy window sill container if need be, but grow the ones you’ll use the most, right where it is easiest to harvest them. And just remember, you may not feel comfortable leaving young ones with heated cooking utensils and stoves for even the five minutes it takes to get to the back of your yard.

Try experimenting with the different types of herbs there are and use them in your foods. Try using different combinations. You can also grow your own herbs to make your own natural herbal courses of action based on the information handed down over the generations. You can find a lot of information in your local library or at your health store. But to be safe everyone should be sure to consult their doctor or qualified health professional before starting herbal remedies.

Green Tea Has More Antioxidants Than Black Tea

Processing green tea differs from the way black tea is processed. Antioxidants in the tea leaves are nearly exhausted after black tea is processed whereas in green tea, almost all of its antioxidants are left in the leaves after processing.

Antioxidants in an apple

Antioxidants are active when an apple is sliced. You must have noticed that after slicing an apple, its flesh slowly turns into brown. That is because the apple’s flesh is reacting to oxygen when it is exposed to air. This reaction produces free radicals and could create a chain reaction.

All fruits have antioxidants. Different types of fruits have different types of antioxidants. This is nature’s defense for the fruit from oxidizing.

Let’s get back to the apple. When free radicals are formed in the exposed flesh, the antioxidants in the apple quenches these free radicals to prevent a chain reaction. All of the exposed area of the flesh reacts to oxygen and therefore all these areas forms free radicals which are then quenched by the apple’s antioxidants. Chain reaction cannot continue to the inside flesh as antioxidants quench these free radicals.

The discoloration you see in the exposed flesh are the result of molecules which reacted to oxygen. Scrape off that layer and you will see what the antioxidants in the apple has accomplished. It stopped the oxidation from going further inside the flesh.

Black Tea Processing

The following are the basic processing of black tea.

1. Harvesting
2. Withering – the leaves are spread and left to dry.
3. Rolling – the leaves are twisted and rolled either by hand or machinery. This process breaks or cracks the surface of the leaves exposing it to oxygen.
4. Oxidation or fermentation – the leaves are left to dry for several hours until it is about 80% dry.
5. Drying – the leaves further dried by applying heat without burning the leaves. This stops the oxidation process.

Just like the apple when the membranes of the leaves cracked in the rolling process, it exposed the insides of the leaves to oxygen. The free radicals produced are quenched by the antioxidants inside the tea leaves. Therefore those antioxidants that quenched the free radicals are already spent and will not be available in the finished product.

Green Tea Processing

This process differs a little bit from the way black tea is processed.

1. Harvesting
2. Withering
3. Drying

As you can see, the steps that can oxidize the leaves, rolling and oxidation, are omitted leaving the antioxidant content of the leaves almost intact.

Which do you prefer?

Now that you have seen the difference in processing and the final outcome of antioxidant content, what do you prefer? Tea with more antioxidant content? Others prefer the stronger taste of black tea against the milder taste of green tea. Others prefer green tea because of its healthful benefits.

How to get more antioxidants from tea

Our body can absorb only a small percentage of the antioxidants in tea. By combining it with citrus juices or vitamin c, our body’s absorption of the antioxidants in tea can multiply more than 5 times
